Define the Mission

The team must be dedicated to the planning effort to be effective. The management’s demonstrated commitment to the project will go far in achieving this dedication and will promote an atmosphere of cooperation and empowerment.

This dedication can be strengthened even further if a prominent member of the organization leads the planning team and issues a mission statement that demonstrates the company’s commitment to the planning effort. This mission statement should achieve two primary goals:

• It should outline the purpose of the plan and indicate that the development process will include the entire organization.
• It should define the authority of the group, and outline the group's structure.
