2007 Virginia Citizen Corps Tidewater Training Day

We are happy to announce the 2007 Virginia Citizen Corps Tidewater Training Day, sponsored by local Citizen Corps groups and the state Citizen Corps Office. This training has been scheduled on the day following the Virginia Public Safety Outreach Conference so that those who travel to the conference from across the state can obtain an additional day of training at no cost – so be sure to register for each Training Day session that you want to participate in and register for the VPSOC too!

All sessions will be held at the Peninsula Health Center at 416 J.Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, next to the Riverside Hospital (3.1 miles from the Newport News Omni Hotel).

Registration for Tidewater Training Day is now closed.

Session 1: Managing Spontaneous Volunteers in Times of Disaster

What is a Volunteer Reception Center and Why is it Important to Your Community?

Thursday, Nov. 15, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Does your community know how to best use the many individuals who will be looking for a way to help after a disaster? Are you ready to match skills with the needs in the community? When it happens, they will come…. Will you be ready?

This session is based on the Volunteer Reception Center model developed by Volunteer Florida. The aim of Volunteer Reception Center is to connect spontaneous volunteers with requesting agencies, by registering, interviewing and assigning potential volunteers to a volunteer opportunity that best meets their needs and skills; providing safety and job training as necessary. This process not only protects the volunteers, but also provides protection for those who may be victims of a disaster. This training is intended to help you learn more about Volunteer Reception Centers, why they are important to your community and how they can be integrated into your emergency planning. This training includes a hands-on exercise and will teach you how to:

The session is sponsored and taught by the Peninsula Volunteer Center and its employees. Lunch and refreshments are included. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

Session 2: Cultural Sensitivity

Thursday, Nov. 15, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

As the demographics in our communities continue to change, it is important to fine-tune our cultural sensitivities. Working in a diverse community can challenge our beliefs, reinforce prejudices, and prevent us from seeing beyond race, age, religion and other barriers. This workshop deals with cultural and multi-generational differences and includes basic information to help the uninitiated understand Islam. This specific training program is used by State Department to brief its contractors prior to them deploying overseas.

The session is taught by Rebecca Feaster of Feaster and Associates. Lunch and refreshments are included. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

Session 3: Psychological First Aid (PFA)

Thursday, Nov. 15, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This session is an evidence-informed modular approach for assisting people in the immediate aftermath of disaster and terrorism events: to reduce initial distress, and to foster short and long-term adaptive functioning. It is for use by mental health specialists, including first responders, incident command systems, primary and emergency health care providers, school crisis response teams, faith-based organizations, disaster relief organizations, Community Emergency Response Teams, Medical Reserve Corps and Citizens Corps in diverse setting. The Introduction to Psychological First Aid training will teach volunteers how to:

The session is taught by Pamela Moran-Weaver, RN. The information provided in the class is based on the Psychological First Aid: Field Operations Guide (Second Edition) and the Disaster behavioral Health Curriculum. Lunch and refreshments are included. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.
