IRS AIDS FLOODED TAZEWELL RESIDENTS BY ALLOWING AMENDED RETURNS

TAZEWELL, VA. -- Disaster recovery officials announced that county residents who suffered un-reimbursed casualty losses due to the recent floods on July 8-10 may be eligible for a tax refund from the IRS.

The IRS has ruled that such losses, defined as damage, destruction, or loss of property resulting from a catastrophic event, may be deducted on the federal income tax return for the year in which the casualty occurred or, by amendment, on the return for the preceding tax period.

Tazewell County taxpayers who are also disaster victims may amend their Year 2000 federal tax returns, filed in April of this year, to reflect all or part of their losses, or they may include the losses in their returns to be filed in 2001.

Deductible items include homes and personal property, such as furnishings, appliances, vehicles, and clothing.

Claiming casualty losses can provide money for home repair or replacing damaged goods.

Inventories compiled by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) inspectors will serve to document losses and may be attached to your tax form or amendment without making a new list.

To schedule a visit by a FEMA housing inspector, flood victims must first register for assistance by calling 1-800-462-9029 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. Individuals with speech or hearing impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) should call toll-free 1-800-462-7585.

To receive Form 4684, the Casualties and Thefts Form and instructions, call 1-800-829-3676 or visit the IRS website, www.irs.gov, to download the form. For more information, taxpayer/disaster victims are urged to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, visit the IRS office in their community, or visit the IRS website.
