TAZEWELL, VA. -- Disaster recovery officials said that damage caused by severe weekend storms in southwestern Virginia may be eligible for federal-state disaster assistance programs in place for flooding that occurred in the same region in late July. "The period for reporting damages is still open in the eight counties now eligible for individual assistance," said Marianne C. Jackson, federal coordinating officer for disaster recovery. Recovery programs are in effect for residents of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell and Wise counties. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Virginia disaster assistance includes grants for emergency disaster housing and essential repairs, individual and family grants and low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Individuals who experienced flooding for the first time may call the toll-free FEMA registration line at 1-800-462-9029. Individuals with speech or hearing impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) should call toll-free 1-800-462-7585 Jackson explained that homeowners, renters and business operators who were registered earlier for recovery assistance may update or change their application to include the new losses by calling the FEMA Helpline, toll-free, at 1-800-525-0321, or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. The lines are open from Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Sundays. |
