Richmond, VA - President Bush has granted a request by Governor Timothy M. Kaine for federal assistance to state government and 21 local governments in the wake of Tropical Depression Ernesto that began on August 29. The storm caused seven deaths and an estimated $118 million in damages.
The declaration makes the Public Assistance Program available to cover eligible government and certain private non-profit costs for damage to critical infrastructure, debris removal and related emergency services. Virginia's request for federal assistance for individual property owners and renters impacted by the severe weather was not approved.
"I am grateful that President Bush has approved federal assistance for repairing Virginia's infrastructure, including our roads, parks and public buildings," Gov. Kaine said. "A lot of individual Virginians still need help with their recovery efforts, and we will consult with our local and federal partners to determine if an appeal might be appropriate to request assistance for them as well."
The declaration makes federal funds available for eligible government and private non-profit costs in the counties of Accomack, Caroline, Charles City, Dinwiddie, Essex, Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, Northampton, Northumberland, Richmond, Surry, Sussex, Westmoreland and York and the independent cities of Poquoson and Richmond.
In addition, Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds were approved for the entire Commonwealth. The Hazard Mitigation program provides funds for government projects that help reduce disaster risks by protecting homes and businesses against future damage.
