North Anna Power Station Will Test Early Warning Sirens May 20

RICHMOND, VA – State and local officials will test the early warning siren system around the North Anna Power Station Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at approximately 11:10 a.m. In Caroline, Hanover, Louisa and Spotsylvania counties, 68 sirens located within a 10-mile radius of the station will sound a three-minute tone.

Siren tests consist of a single three-minute tone and take place quarterly on the third Wednesday of February, May, August and November. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Dominion Virginia Power and the localities where the sirens are located participate in the quarterly tests.

The siren notification signifying an actual emergency at North Anna Power Station consists of four separate three-minute activations, each separated by a one-minute silent interval. Total elapsed time for actual emergency notification is 15 minutes. The siren system alerts the public to tune in to their local radio or television stations for information. Additional information about the siren system and emergency notification can be found in the annual North Anna Power Station emergency information calendar mailed to households in the region.

The next test of the North Anna siren system will be Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009.
