Hazard Mitigation Programs

Overview of Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program

The Commonwealth of Virginia administers the Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program through the Mitigation Section of the Recovery and Mitigation Division. Eligible applicants are local governments and planning district commissions with hazard mitigation plans that will be approved by Spring 2006, state colleges and universities and private non-profit organizations.

The purpose of the PDM program is to provide grant funding to make a community more resilient to natural hazards and to reduce the reliance on funding from actual disaster declarations. The grants are awarded on a nationally competitive basis and are available for mitigation planning and structural projects that reduce the overall risk to population and structures. A separate grant application is required for each project. For more information and the application please go to the VDEM Grant and Funding Database.

To better prepare you for the PDM application process, The Virginia Department of Emergency Management would like to invite you to attend the FY ’06 Pre-Disaster Mitigation Workshop on mitigation project development for the Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program to be held October 5-7, 2005. For more information, please see our flyer [37 kd PDF] and our registration form [19kb PDF].
