Program Overview

What is the Reservist Program?

When the Virginia Department of Emergency Management's permanent staff is not available to support extended response and recovery operations during major disasters and emergencies, a Reservist program provides additional personnel to support the state's actions in a disaster or on an "as needed basis." Who should apply?

Any qualified adult who can commit the time to complete the required training of approximately 40 hours annually and has the flexibility to be deployed anywhere in the state from 12 hours to two weeks.

What are the qualifications?

VDEM looks for the following qualifications when reviewing applications for the Reservist Program:

Successful applicants, following appropriate orientation and training, must be available for duty on short notice and willing to travel overnight. A valid drivers license is required. Must be able to pass a criminal background check to include fingerprinting.

How can I apply?

Download and complete a state application from www.dhrm.state.va.us. If you have filled out a state application before, you will need to create a user account. Once you have completed the online application, print it out and mail it to:
