Governor's Proclamation
By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
Hurricane and Flooding Preparedness Week
WHEREAS, Virginia’s location along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean puts our Commonwealth at risk of absorbing the dangerous effects of both offshore and inland hurricanes; and
WHEREAS, Virginia has a history of experiencing powerful hurricanes, including Hurricanes Camille in 1969, Agnes in 1972, Juan in 1985, Floyd and Dennis in 1999, Isabel in 2003, each of which caused some of Virginia’s worst recorded disasters, injured or killed hundreds of people and resulted in millions of dollars worth of property damage; and
WHEREAS, the devastation that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused in states along the Gulf Coast in 2005 demonstrated the dangers hurricanes pose and the importance of being prepared for them; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's citizens can greatly reduce hurricane and flooding-related property loss, injuries and deaths by taking appropriate preparedness measures before, during and after each storm; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service, local emergency management and Virginia’s Citizen Corps will offer hurricane safety information and preparedness techniques to citizens throughout Virginia during Hurricane and Flooding Preparedness Week; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth has enacted an annual Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Equipment sales tax holiday to enable Virginia citizens to gather essential supplies during Hurricane and Flooding Preparedness Week;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Timothy M. Kaine, do hereby recognize May 25-31, 2008, as HURRICANE and FLOODING PREPAREDNESS WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
