2005-2006 Reservist Course Descriptions

The courses listed below are specifically tailored for VDEM reservists. A number of emergency management courses are also part of the reservist training program and are so designated in the training calendar and emergency management course descriptions. All instruction is offered free of charge. Reservists are required to attend all sessions of each course, seminar or workshop in which they are enrolled. Those who do not comply may be denied course completion and /or travel expense reimbursement. Reservists will not be given credit for any cancelled courses. Reservists are responsible for contacting the Reservist Program Manager to schedule a substitute course.

Action Tracking System/Tabletop Exercise (Required for VEOC Reservists)
This is a computer-based program designed to track incoming messages to the Virginia Emergency Operations Center (VEOC) from time of arrival until final action is completed. This exercise simulates the preparedness and response phases of disaster operations and the transition of operations to a DFO. Exercise content may vary. ATS is only available in the VEOC.

CPR/First Aid/AED Training
American Heart Association certified Heartsaver class instructing Adult CPR, basic first aid and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator. This course will teach rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor skills they need to recognize emergencies and give first aid.

FEMA Damage Assessment Workshop
A one-day Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) class for VDEM Personnel involved in conducting PDA'S in the Commonwealth. Team Members will be trained in the current FEMA damage definitions, policies and procedures.

Logistics ATS and Tabletop Exercise
Action Tracking System training session will be conducted to provide an overview for users of the computer-based program used for tracking incoming messages, request for assistance from localities to the Virginia Emergency Operations Center (VEOC). Following ATS training, the Logistics Section will conduct a seminar on the organization, role, and responsibility of the Logistics Section as part of the VERT.

New Employee Orientation
One day training to give an overview of the program areas and functions of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to give an understanding of the agency's mission.

Planning Section - Action Tracking System
All sections within the Virginia Emergency Operations Center use the same version of the Action Tracking System (ATS); however, the Planning Section has some unique requirements for information available within ATS. Participants in this session will review the basics of the latest version of ATS, examine some useful techniques for finding and sorting information within ATS, and examine data available in the Online EOC.

Planning Section - Tabletop Exercise
Participants will review key section responsibilities per the Standard Operating Procedures, determine who is tasked with the action, and how each is accomplished.

Reservist Program Seminar
This 8-hour program provides updates on VDEM policies and procedures, new agency initiatives and a team-building exercise. Reservists are recognized for their years of service with VDEM, disaster activations and completion of training requirements during the training year.

WebEOC Training
The new crisis information management system which will be implemented during training year 2006 to eventually replace the current Action Tracking System.
